ADBA welcomes ENA's support for biomethane in Pathways to Net Zero Report

The Energy Networks Association (ENA) this week published the first report from its Gas Decarbonisation Project, Pathways to Net Zero, in which it predicts "a major expansion of biomethane supply to the gas networks" by 2030 and beyond. Quoting research from the UK Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) and the Committee on Climate Change, the report expects the supply to increase from 3TWh in 2018 to 60 TWh by 2050 and for "biomethane from AD and Bio-SNG to displace natural gas for end-users outside of the dedicated hydrogen clusters".

The ENA's Gas Decarbonisation Pathways Project is a major industry initiative that is building on the world-leading work that the gas networks have been undertaking to use new technology to build a low cost, low carbon network. The Pathways to Net Zero report was delivered by leading energy consultancy Navigant as the first output from this initiative.

Charlotte Morton, Chief Executive of ADBA, said: "We are delighted that biomethane is getting the recognition it deserves and that its potential to make a significant contribution towards decarbonising the heat sector is acknowledged in such a major project.  AD is a ready-to-use technology which is already compatible with existing infrastructure and so could easily realise its full potential by 2030 if not sooner, as part of achieving the UK's Net Zero emissions targets.  This will require appropriate government support and ahead of the General Election we are engaging with all of the leading parties to ensure their manifestos include a commitment to developing AD and biomethane as a key part of their future energy policy."

Presenting the report, Navigant Director Mark Livingstone explained: “To achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, urgent action is required across all fronts and the gas networks must have a prominent role. Our analysis demonstrates that there are technically viable and cost-effective pathways for low carbon and renewable gas to contribute to the decarbonisation of the GB energy system in combination with electrification, carbon capture and storage, and improvements in energy efficiency. Biomethane has an important role to play in these pathways, so steps to facilitate gas grid connections and expand the supply and use of biomethane feature as important action areas.”

David Smith, Chief Executive of Energy Networks Association, added: "Navigant's report shows how critical biomethane will be to help us achieve our Net Zero targets. Government, the regulator and industry must take decisions now to build on existing success and create the right policy and regulatory environment to attract the investment required to deliver the world’s first net zero emissions gas network for the public. This includes making a decision about a replacement for the RHI which has been instrumental in allowing 100 green gas sites to connect to the gas grid."
